Dr. S. A. Channiwala retired from the post of Professor (HAG), Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat in September 2019. However, he is currently continuing his research activities as a holder of the prestigious CSIR Bhatnagar Fellowship at SVNIT, Surat till December 2024. He has obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees from one of the India’s most premier institute – IIT, Bombay. His research area includes Combustion, Gasification including Hybrid Plasma Gasification Technology, Small Scale Gas Turbine Combustors, Turbomachines, I. C. Engines, Automobile engineering, High lift Generating Fuselage, Waste to Wealth Projects, Alternate Sources of Energy, Bio-Energy. He has a total of more than 40 years of teaching and research experience. He has supervised 26 Ph.D. students, more than 103 M.Tech students and published more than 235 Research Papers in reputed Journals and Conferences. He has more than 20 patents to his credit. He is actively involved in various sponsored research projects and high quality consultancy assignments. One of prestigious research project for Development of Hybrid Plasma Gasification Technology for Municipal Solid Waste Management is currently ongoing. More than 20 MoUs have been signed with the industries under him. He has been awarded the young scientist award twice and has total 9 awards to his credit. He has also served SVNIT in various capacities. He was In-charge Director (3 times) and Professor In-charge (General Administration) at SVNIT, Surat.
Major Achievements and Assignments:
- Establishment of National Centre for Testing and Development of Small Scale Combustors
for Turbofan/Turbojet Engines under High-Pressure, High-Temperature Conditions. - Developed Zero Effluent Discharge Gasification System – 1st of its kind across the Globe.
- Developed Hybrid Plasma Gasification Technology for Municipal Solid Waste Management.
- Developed India’s first Hydrogen Engine based on delayed entry technique at IIT, Bombay in 1979-80.
- Conducted/Organized more than 30 Short Term Training Programs on Combustion, Gasification Turbomachines, Gas Turbine Engine and Components at SVNIT, Surat.
- Developed India’s first small cryogenic Wind – Tunnel (Scaled Model).
- Developed India’s 1st 0.5 MW Sewage Gas based Power Plant at Anjana STP, SMC-Surat.
- Developed one of the largest and most advanced Bio-CNG (2000 kg/day), Bio – Organic Liquid Fertilizer (70,000 to 80,000 litre/day) and Bio – Organic Solid Fertilizer (6,000 to 8,000 kg/day) at Dungra, Kamrej, Surat.
- Development of One of India’s Largest Vegetable Waste Based Biogas Bottling Plant (max. 5000 m3/day) for APMC Market, Surat.
- Testing and Failure Analysis of 3rd Stage Gas Turbine blades for NTPC, Kawas.
- Developed Dedicated CNG Engine Technology.
- Developed India’s first Solar Assisted Electric Vehicle
