The Combustion Institute (C.I.)

The Combustion Institute (CI) is a prestigious international, non-profit, scientific, and educational organization founded in 1954. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United State of America. It is dedicated to advancing the study and application of combustion science and engineering across the globe. Through its network of affiliated national and regional sections, the Institute promotes collaboration among researchers, engineers, and industry professionals engaged in the field of combustion. CI organizes the International Symposium on Combustion, one of the most prominent events in the field, held every two years. This symposium brings together the global combustion research community to share innovations, present technical papers, and set the direction for future research. The Institute also publishes the renowned Proceedings of the Combustion Institute and Combustion and Flame, both respected journals featuring peer-reviewed research articles.
Combustion science plays a vital role in addressing critical challenges related to energy, transportation, climate change, fire safety, and environmental protection. The Combustion Institute supports these efforts by fostering a collaborative environment that spans academia, industry, and government research organizations. It offers awards, fellowships, and educational resources to support both established professionals and the next generation of combustion scientists.

The Combustion Institute-Indian Section (CIIS)

The Combustion Institute-Indian Section (CIIS) is a registered and active regional section of the Combustion Institute, dedicated to promoting excellence in combustion science and engineering within India. The CIIS started its activity in India in 1974 hosting the 1st National Conference on IC Engine and Combustion (1st NCICEC) in IIT Delhi. The CIIS celebrated its 50th years of existence in India during the 1st International Conference on IC Engine, propulsion and Combustion in Dehradun in November 2024. The CIIS also hosted the 8th Asia Pacific Conference on Combustion (ASPACC) in December 2010 in Hyderabad.
The CIIS serves as a hub for Indian researchers, academics, engineers, and students engaged in combustion-related disciplines such as energy systems, propulsion, fire dynamics, emissions control, and clean fuel technologies. Through a wide range of academic, technical, and professional development activities, the CIIS fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among universities, research institutions, and industries across India. Its most prominent event is the National and International Conferences on Combustion —a biennial gathering that attracts leading combustion experts from India and abroad. In addition, the CIIS regularly conducts workshops, training programs, student paper contests, and joint events with government and private R&D labs.
Membership is open to students, professionals, and institutions with an interest in combustion science. Members gain access to networking opportunities, research collaboration, travel grants, and updates from the global combustion community. The CIIS plays a critical role in nurturing emerging talent and driving innovation in India’s energy and combustion sectors. For more details on membership, events, or collaboration, please feel free to visit our website or contact the Secretary of the CIIS.
